Jake Riley grew up as a cowboy kid, right here in the Upper Arkansas Valley. He first encountered the art of cowboy poetry by attending Michael Martin Murphy’s WestFest in Copper Mountain with his dad. It was there that he witnessed the art of performed poetry by Baxter Black and Waddie Mitchell and fell in love with the medium. He had always loved a good rhyme and began writing some on his own. Jake has performed his work in 11 states, including three times at the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nevada. Jake’s work is probably best described as “cowboy contemporary,” but collides with the non-western realm as often as not. Jake has come to love the performance aspect of the spoken word and sharing a good story with his audience. His work is often humorous, sometimes thought-provoking, and always from the heart.
