DESCRIPTION:The Stage and Rail Historic Route\, an initiative of the Greater Arkansas River Nature Association\, is teaming up with Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area and Cloud City Wheelers to celebrate Bike Your Park Day on October 4 with a guided bike ride on the Stage and Rail Historic Route. \nThe route will highlight some of the newest dedicated sections in Lake County\, traveling from Ice Palace Park in Leadville to the Hayden Meadows Recreation Area utilizing bike paths\, county roads and forest service roads. The route is 17 miles\, and has some elevation gain. A shuttle will be arranged by the Cloud City Wheelers for the return trip from Hayden Meadows to Ice Palace Park. \n“We look forward to highlighting this important connection with the Stage and Rail Trail project in Lake County\,” said Alan Robinson\, Stage and Rail Trail Volunteer Project Advisor and ride leader. Banned Books Week brings together libraries\, publishers\, authors\, and schools to celebrate the freedom to read. \nAt Lake County Public Library\, we celebrate by inviting nationally and internationally known authors who have experienced their works being banned. This event has grown rapidly since our inaugural event with Nic Stone in 2022 and we are committed to continuing this event.  \nMark your calendars now for Thursday\, October 8th and join us for an incredible author talk at Freight! The first Latina to ever write for Marvel Comics\, Gabby is funny\, insightful\, authentic\, and inspires us all to live a life that is joyfully open and revolutionary. Gabby Rivera is a Bronx-born queer Puerto Rican babe on a mission to create the wildest\, most fun stories ever. Gabby is the first Latina ever to write for Marvel comics\, penning the solo series AMERICA about America Chavez\, a portal-punching queer Latina powerhouse. \nGabby’s critically acclaimed debut novel Juliet Takes a Breath was called “f*cking outstanding” by Roxane Gay and was re-published by Penguin Random House in 2019. Mic named it one of the 25 essential books to read for Women’s History Month\, and Latina magazine called it the “dopest LGBTQA YA book ever.” \nGabby presented before the United Nations in 2020 as an invited speaker to their Unstereotyping Alliance Conference\, and she has collaborated with groups such as the Ford Motor Company\, the Makers Women’s Conference and Somos Familia\, to uplift joyful storytelling and the magic of queer diasporicans everywhere. \nIn 2022\, Gabby became a Sundance Screenwriters Fellow and received an Advancing Justice Award from Catalyst California\, alongside activist Dolores Huerta and politician Sheila Kuehl. She currently resides on the West Coast and hosts Joy Uprising\, a podcast that brings together her favorite revolutionary humans to honor joy in a chaotic world.

DESCRIPTION:“We begin\, as many books end\, with a deathbed.”\n-Chris Woodyard\, The Victorian Book of the Dead \nDespite the incredible progress of the late 19th and early 20th centuries\, death was an ever-present part of life. Dangerous working conditions\, illness\, inadequate medical care\, and frequent accidents meant that families were intimately familiar with loss\, and developed elaborate traditions for mourning the dead and comforting the living. \nFrom prescribed periods of wearing black to rituals surrounding deathbeds\, wakes and funerals\, Victorian and Edwardian mourning customs shaped how people from all social classes confronted mortality. For some\, Spiritualism offered another possibility: the chance to seek signs that their departed loved ones were still near. \nAdapted from the Healy House Museum & Dexter Cabin’s exhibit of the same name\, Victorian Spirits explores popular Victorian and Edwardian mourning traditions and Leadville’s underground Spiritualist movement\, with additional ghost stories and tales of encounters with the dead from the 1860s to 1920s. \n**Not recommended for kids under 13. This presentation includes discussions of death\, mourning\, and funerary practices.** \nThe presentation will take place in our dining room. Seating will be first come\, first served. \nParking is available in front of the museum on East 10th Street; overflow parking will be available on West 10th Street across Harrison Avenue above Ice Palace Park.
