SUMMARY:The Observatory at Climax Presentation at the Mining Museum
DESCRIPTION:Come to the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum for a special presentation by Hannah Rose Shell \nThursday\, October 8th from 5pm to 6pm \nFree and Open to the Public! \nIn the 1940s\, the Climax Molybdenum Company collaborated with Harvard University to establish a solar observatory on Ceresco Ridge above Fremont Pass to study the corona\, the sun’s outer atmosphere. In this talk\, historian and filmmaker Hanna Rose Shell explores the observatory’s history\, its connections to the mine\, and the lives of the people who worked there. Drawing on archival photographs and films alongside her recent photography and filming at Climax\, she considers how mining and astronomy shared—and transformed—this mountain landscape. \nHanna Rose Shell is a historian of science and technology\, and a visual artist. The author and director of multiple award-winning books and documentary films\, she obtained a Ph.D. in the History of Science from Harvard\, worked as an Associate Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology\, and is currently a Professor in the College of Arts & Sciences at University of Colorado Boulder.
