Altitude Safety Tips for Visiting Leadville & Twin Lakes

October 1, 2025

At 10,152 feet above sea level, Leadville is the highest incorporated city in North America. Surrounded by stunning 14,000-foot peaks and the crystal-clear waters of Twin Lakes, the beauty here takes your breath away—literally. For many visitors, the elevation is part of the adventure, but it’s important to prepare so you can make the most of your trip.

Why Altitude Matters

At higher elevations, the air contains less oxygen. That means your body works harder, especially when you’re hiking, biking, skiing, or simply exploring town. Given time, your body can usually adapt to altitude-related changes that affect how much oxygen you get with each breath. Without enough time to adapt, you may experience symptoms of altitude sickness, such as:

  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Loss of appetite

These symptoms are usually temporary, but being prepared helps you stay comfortable during your visit.

Tips for a Safe & Fun Visit

  1. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
Drink plenty of water both before and during your trip. Dehydration can happen more quickly at higher elevations and dehydration can worsen some altitude sickness symptoms. The dryer environment of Colorado can also lead to dehydration so staying hydrated is your best defense!
  2. Take It Easy on Day One
Give your body time to adjust by planning a relaxed first day. Stroll historic Harrison Avenue, explore our many museums, or enjoy a lakeside picnic before heading out on any big hikes or bike rides.
  3. Limit Alcohol
Alcohol can hit harder at high altitudes and may worsen dehydration. Save the celebratory craft beer or cocktail for later in your trip, after your body has had time to adjust.
  4. Fuel Up with Healthy Meals
A symptom of altitude sickness can be loss of appetite. Be sure to continue eating well to help keep your body fueled while it adapts. Opt for balanced meals with whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, and don’t skip snacks—especially before outdoor adventures.
  5. Protect Yourself from the Sun
UV rays are stronger at higher elevations. Pack sunglasses, sunscreen, and a wide-brim hat to protect your skin and eyes.
  6. Rest & Listen to Your Body
If you start to feel unwell, slow down. Lightheadedness and fatigue are signals to rest. In rare cases of more serious symptoms—like severe shortness of breath or chest pain—descend to a lower elevation and seek medical attention.

Family-Friendly Altitude Tips

Traveling with kids? Children are just as susceptible to altitude effects as adults. Encourage them to drink water frequently, schedule plenty of downtime, and keep outdoor activities fun but not overly strenuous on the first day.

When exploring the lakes, trails, or campgrounds, always review Twin Lakes Recreation Area updates and Leadville Ranger District info to stay current on trail conditions, closures, and safety alerts.

And before you head into the woods or light a campfire, always check Fire Bans & Alerts and Lake County’s Fire Restriction Information.
