High Country, High Standards: Enjoy Leadville Responsibly This Summer

May 21, 2025

Summer in Leadville and Twin Lakes is a spellbinding time of year. As the snow continues to melt, wildflower-filled meadows come to life, wildlife becomes more active, and frozen streams swell into rushing creeks fed by spring runoff. It’s an extraordinary time of year to explore the high country. Below you’ll find valuable tips on how to explore responsibly and help preserve this incredible place.

Stay on the Trail

Cutting switchbacks or stepping off-trail may seem harmless, but it damages fragile alpine vegetation and contributes to erosion. Stick to designated paths to keep trails healthy and accessible for all.

Have a Poop Plan

Before hitting the trail, plan ahead! Some restrooms may be closed, so be ready to pack out your waste using a WAG bag (available online and locally at the Leadville Visitor Center and Leadville Outdoors), or a Pact Lite Kit. If you forget a WAG bag and conditions are dry, you can bury waste in a “cat hole” 6–8 inches deep, at least 200 feet from water, trails, and campsites. Always pack out your toilet paper in a sealed bag.

Camp with Care

Camp on durable surfaces including established and designated sites or on rock, gravel or dry grasses and clear surfaces that are at least 150 feet away from any water source. Damage occurs when surface vegetation or communities of organisms are trampled beyond recovery, leading to barren areas and erosion. Remember good campsites are found not made.

Always follow local fire restrictions, and fully extinguish any campfire. If conditions are too dry, skip the fire and enjoy the stars instead. Responsible camping protects the forest, our community, and keeps future trips possible.

Leash Up and Clean Up

Dogs make great adventure companions, but off-leash pets can disturb wildlife and other visitors. Keep your dog leashed and always clean up and pack out pet waste to protect our environment and waterways.

Pack It In, Pack It Out

Even small items like fruit peels or gear tags can harm the environment and wildlife. Bring a trash bag (ziplock baggies work great) and carry everything out. Going the extra mile to pick up litter left by others also makes a big difference.

Be a Smart Parker

Summer brings more visitors to popular trailheads. Park only in designated areas and don’t block roads, driveways, or emergency access points.

Be Bear Aware

The black bears in the area are more active in spring, summer, and fall. Store all food, trash, and scented items in a bear-proof container or locked vehicle. Keeping campsites clean and secure protects us and the bears.

Respect Local Communities

Leadville and Twin Lakes are proud mountain towns that welcome visitors with hospitality. Return the favor by supporting local businesses, following posted rules, and being courteous to residents and fellow adventurers.

The start of summer is the perfect time to reconnect with nature and reflect on how each of us can make a positive impact. By treading lightly and respecting the land and each other, every adventure becomes part of something bigger. Learn more about how to be a safe and responsible visitor by checking out our Do Leadville Twin Lakes Right campaign or coming to the Leadville Visitor Center during your stay.

Thanks for doing Leadville and Twin Lakes right. See you on the trail!
