Winter Driving Safety: Getting to Leadville and Twin Lakes, Colorado
Winter transforms Leadville and Twin Lakes into a snow-covered wonderland – perfect for skiing, snowshoeing, and cozy mountain getaways. While our roads are open and maintained year-round, winter weather can make driving more challenging. With the right preparation and a few safety tips, you can arrive safely and enjoy the season’s beauty.

Roads Are Plowed – But Drive Prepared
The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) works hard to keep mountain highways plowed and maintained throughout the winter. Still, it’s common to see a layer of packed snow or ice — especially after a storm or in shaded stretches of road. Even when the pavement looks dry, black ice can linger, particularly overnight and in the early morning. If possible, start your drive a little later in the day when the sun has had time to warm the roads.
Plan Ahead and Travel Smart
Before you hit the road, check current travel conditions at COTrip.org, CDOT’s real-time traveler information site. Explore the map and view layers showing road conditions, travel times and camera views to know conditions before departure.
A few other ways to make your mountain trip smoother:
- Travel during off-peak times to avoid heavy weekend or holiday traffic.
- Allow extra time for your trip, and keep your gas tank at least half full in case of delays.
- Pack winter essentials: blankets, water, snacks, a phone charger, warm clothing and shoes, extra windshield wiper fluid and a scraper or shovel.

Vehicle Tips for Safe Mountain Driving
Mountain weather can change quickly, so make sure your vehicle is winter-ready:
- Use four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive for winter mountain travel. If you’re renting a car, it’s worth spending a little extra for the upgrade.
- Carry tire chains or traction devices. Colorado’s Passenger Vehicle Traction Law (Code 15) can go into effect during storms, requiring adequate tires or chains on many mountain roads. You can read more about this rule on CDOT’s Traction Law page.
- Take it slow. Even with AWD, icy corners and sudden stops can catch drivers off guard. Practice ice driving techniques — steer gently, brake slowly, and give plenty of space between vehicles.
