The Observatory at Climax Talk and Image Projections at CMC
October 25, 2025 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Free
Dr. Hanna Rose Shell from CU Boulder will be visiting the Leadville Colorado Mountain College campus on Saturday, October 25 to present her research on the Solar Observatory at Climax Mine. Dr. Shell has done extensive research on the Solar Observatory built in the late 1930s (the brainchild of Donald Menzel, world renowned astrophysicist who grew up in Leadville) and used in the 1940s.
This is a unique opportunity to explore a fascinating part of local and scientific history—how both miners and an astronomer contributed to the war effort in the 1940s. The event features two components running concurrently:
- A lecture by Dr. Shell in the Pinnacle Learning Commons (our library)
- A projection of original 1940s solar observation slides inside the Climax Molybdenum Leadership Center (our gym)
Please click here to RSVP for the event. Please RSVP by Saturday, October 18.
