With a record high of just 86 degrees, our high-elevation paradise is your natural air conditioner. And the best part? You don’t have to retreat indoors to stay comfortable. At over 10,000 feet, you’ll find lakes, rivers, breezy patios, and shady trails perfect for soaking up the season without overheating.

Here’s how to stay cool while making the most of summer in Leadville and Twin Lakes:

Lakeside Living: Paddle, Picnic, or Just Play

Turquoise Lake and Twin Lakes are the heart of summer fun here in Lake County. Both offer easy access to the water, stunning mountain views, and family-friendly shores where you can dip your toes or launch your next adventure.

  • Paddleboarding & Kayaking: Glide across the calm morning waters of Twin Lakes with a stand up paddleboard (SUP) or kayak rental from SUP & Cycle or Twin Lakes Adventures. Both offer shoreline rentals just steps from the water, so it’s easy to spend an afternoon on the lake, even if you’re short on time or experience.
  • Canoeing & Boating: Bring your own boat or hop on the scenic Interlaken Boat Tour to explore hidden coves and historic landmarks from the water.
  • Picnic & Play: Pack a lunch, bring the kids, and settle in for a lakeside picnic. Turquoise Lake’s day-use areas and shorelines are ideal for relaxing under the trees while the cool breeze rolls in off the water. Can’t get enough? Stay a little longer in one of the USFS Campgrounds.

Cool Currents: Whitewater and Fly Fishing

Just south of Leadville, the Arkansas River offers big thrills and peaceful moments alike.

  • Whitewater Rafting: Several outfitters offer half- and full-day rafting trips on this iconic stretch of river. With rapids ranging from family-friendly to full-on adrenaline, there’s a float for everyone. Aspen White Water Rafting has tours departing from Twin Lakes.
  • Fly Fishing: Wade into the Arkansas for world-class trout fishing or cast a line into our stocked alpine lakes for a peaceful day under bluebird skies. Colorado Fly Fishing Guides has everything you need and offers guided trips for all. Beginners welcome! They will provide the equipment.
  • Fish Hatchery Visit: Curious how all those trout get into our lakes? Visit the Leadville National Fish Hatchery to learn how local waterways are stocked and see baby fish up close. It’s fun, free, and great for families.

Patios with a View (and a Breeze)

After a day on the water, settle into one of Leadville’s high-altitude patios for cool drinks and fresh mountain air.

  • Treeline Kitchen: Sip a cocktail on their rooftop patio while watching the sun dip behind the Sawatch Range.
  • Pastime Saloon: This historic saloon features patio views of Mt. Massive and Mt. Elbert. The Pastime serves chic and fun craft cocktails and live music most weekends.
  • Ale Yak Beer & Food Garden: Ale Yak is the ultimate casual patio space offering shaded seating, Turquoise Lake views, yard games, food trucks and a chilled beverages.
  • Tenderfoot Farm Twin Lakes: Relax in the Tenderfoot Farm garden patio and enjoy hot dogs, brats and customized grilled cheese sandwiches from their food tent.
