Elevate Your Summer: Raft, Reel, Repeat in the Arkansas River Valley

May 21, 2025

Welcome to your perfect summer escape — where mountain peaks meet rushing rivers and anglers and paddlers alike find their paradise. Whether you’re in search of thrills on whitewater rapids or quiet moments with a fly rod in hand, the Upper Arkansas River delivers. With the whitewater season peaking in late May through June and fishing and floating fun all summer long, it’s time to raft, reel, and repeat in one of Colorado’s most dynamic and scenic landscapes.

Ride the Rapids: Whitewater Rafting Season Begins

Late spring marks the beginning of rafting season on the Arkansas River, and it’s nothing short of epic. Fed by high-mountain snowmelt, this river boasts world-class whitewater and spectacular views, making it one of the top rafting destinations in the country.

Key rafting sections include:

  • The Numbers: Fast, technical Class IV-V rapids just south of Twin Lakes.
  • Fractions and Pine Creek: Adrenaline-packed, intermediate-to-advanced stretches near Buena Vista.
  • Browns Canyon: A favorite among kayakers, this National Monument offers stunning granite walls and playful Class III rapids.

Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Areas offer access points all along the river – click to learn more!

Many outfitters, like Aspen Whitewater Rafting in Twin Lakes and more in Buena Vista, provide guided trips and equipment rentals.
