Top Reasons to “Rest in the Rockies” in Leadville & Twin Lakes, Colorado in 2026

December 23, 2025

If your perfect mountain getaway includes a little stillness, a little adrenaline, and a whole lot of scenery, this is the place. In 2026, Leadville and Twin Lakes invite you to Rest in the Rockies, a theme that celebrates both sides of these year round alpine towns.

Sure, you can unwind by a glassy lake. But you can also tackle a 14,000 foot peak, pedal across singletrack trails, or cheer on winter racers before sinking into a wood-fired sauna. Here, “rest” isn’t about slowing down. It’s about feeling revived, no matter how you choose to play. Below are ten ways to find your “Rest in the Rockies” this year in Leadville and Twin Lakes, Colorado.

Sunshine Saunas
  1. Fat Bike Worlds + Sauna Fest: Adventure Meets Alpine Wellness (Jan. 23–25, 2026)

Start the year off right with the return of a favorite event, and this year it comes with a restorative twist. Fat Bike Worlds brings riders from around the globe to take on miles of groomed winter trails, from winding singletrack to exhilarating above-treeline routes designed by Cloud City Wheelers.

New for 2026, Sauna Fest transforms the finish line into an alpine wellness village featuring wood-fired mobile saunas, cold plunges, DJ sets, and a performance by Leadville Americana band Stablehand.

Racers enjoy complimentary access, and visitors can purchase an all-day wristband. It’s high-energy racing paired with high-altitude recovery, a uniquely Leadville way to “Rest in the Rockies”.

  1. Find Stillness Along the Shores of Twin Lakes

Colorado has plenty of lakes, but few feel as tranquil or as transformative as Twin Lakes. Here, you can paddle at sunrise, wander along peaceful shoreline paths to historic structures, or simply sit still and watch the Sawatch Range reflect on the water. It is natural calm you cannot fake and will not forget.

  1. Trails That Energize and Restore

Whether you are summiting Mount Elbert, cruising the Mineral Belt Trail, or exploring pine-scented paths around Turquoise Lake, the region’s trails offer both challenge and clarity. You can push your limits here or find your balance. Most days, you will end up doing both.

  1. Breathe Easy on the Leadville Railroad

For those who prefer their mountain views from a comfortable seat, the Leadville Railroad is your answer. This scenic ride winds through forests and high alpine valleys, offering sweeping views without the climb. Trips going in Summer, Fall and Winter, it is an effortless way to enjoy high-altitude beauty.

  1. Step Into Colorado’s Past Slowly

Leadville’s Silver Rush history is best enjoyed unrushed. Explore museums, wander through historic buildings downtown, or take a self-guided drive through the old mining district. For a deeper look into Colorado’s broader story, walk the Colorado/Continental Divide Trail through nearby Camp Hale, the training ground of the legendary 10th Mountain Division recently designated National Monument. Whether you are learning about miners, mountaineers, or modern trail stewards, history feels richer when you take your time.
