Why It’s a Gem
The Leadville National Fish Hatchery was established in 1889. The Fish Hatchery Nature Trail is a great wooded loop for families and more. Signage along the trail tells of flora and fauna in the area and about half way around is a picnic area perfect for a snack and some play time. Bench seats along the way with views of lakes and mountain peaks allow for relaxed strolling. Be sure to read the signage and look for remnants of the historic Evergreen Lakes Hotel that burned down in 1894.
Extend the walk by looping around Evergreen Lake or connecting with the other nearby trails (Rock Creek Trail, Highline Trail or Kearney Park). Take time to stop in the self guided visitor center, open daily, and bring quarters to feed the fish in the raceways.
