Directions to Trailhead

From Harrison Avenue take west 6th Street turning right on to McWethy Drive/County Road 4. Follow County Road 4 to Turquoise Lake Recreation Area. Proceed across Sugar Loafin’ Dam and follow County Road 4 for 4 miles to the Hagerman Pass intersection (Forest Service Road 105) on the left side of the road. The road changes from paved to dirt at this point. Hagerman Pass can be taken to Frying Pan Lakes Road (22.5 miles) or to past Ruedi Reservoir to Basalt/Highway 82 (56 miles).

Why It’s a Gem

Summiting at nearly 12,000 feet this 4-wheel drive road goes through the old Colorado Midland Railroad path, the first standard gauge railroad in the Rockies. Crossing the Continental Divide with scenic views lakes and peaks. In the area are the Hagerman Tunnel and the Busk-Ivanhoe Tunnel were once used by the railroad. It’s moderate difficulty level starting out following the railway line but then getting steeper, rougher and narrower toward the summit.
