Directions to Trailhead
Take Hwy 24 south toward Twin Lakes. Approximately 5 miles from downtown turn right after the gas station on Highway 300, you will see signs for the fish hatchery. Cross the river and watch for a left hand turn on County Road 11. Shortly after the entrance to the Rolling J Ranch is a right hand turn continuing on Country Road 11/Halfmoon Road. Continue 5 miles on County Road 11/Forest Service Road 110 to the Mount Elbert Trailhead entrance.
Parking
There is a larger dirt lot but can fill up quickly for this popular trail. Parking along road is prohibited in most spots, watch for signage.
Why It’s a Gem
Mount Elbert is Colorado’s highest peak and the second highest peak in the lower 48 states with an elevation of 14,433 feet. Although a shorter trail it is very steep. Be prepared with plenty of water and watchful of storms, with over 2 miles above treeline.
