Directions to Trailhead

From Harrison Avenue in Leadville head south on Hwy 24 for 15 miles to the Hwy 82/Twin Lakes turn off. Turn right and head west on Hwy 82. Drive 1.3 miles to the County Road 24 turn off on the left (north) side of the road. Drive up County Road 24 and keep an eye out for the trailhead parking entrance just past the Lakeview Campground on the left (west) side of the road.

Parking

Very small paved parking area. Avoid parking on edge of County Road 24. Having a backup hiking plan is recommended for if trailhead parking is full.

Why It’s a Gem

Starting out along the Colorado Trail north from the South Elbert Trailhead this trail provides sprawling views of Twin Lakes, lovely aspen groves and beautiful beaver ponds. Do an out and back or follow the forest service 4-wheel drive road back to the trailhead.
